THE SIX PRINCIPLES OF
THE HOUSE OF PLANTS
PLANT CARE = PEOPLE CARE
It is no secret that there are many health benefits from plants. There’s a reason that we gift flowers or plants when someone is down for feeling sick. Living with plants have been known to create a more relaxing atmosphere and help people heal faster. Having plants in your home not only brightens up your surroundings, but it can sharpen your focus, improve your memory, and lead to better quality sleep. Learning to nurture and care for plants leads to better mental and emotional health. In fact, just being around your plants will lift your mood and ease your stress.
PLANTS HELP US BREATHE
Plants are natural air purifiers, converting CO2 to Oxygen. House plants will not only improve the air quality in our homes and help us breathe, but they will also help absorb some of your daily carbon footprint. Even these small environmental benefits can benefit a larger ecosystem. Not only do plants help our bodies breathe, but they help our minds do this as well. Caring for plants remind us to slow down and be in the moment. They encourage mindfulness and a closer connection to nature.

WE LIVE WITH PLANTS / PLANTS LIVE WITH US
Plants make up 80% of the world’s biomass. Humans are only 0.01%! The plants were here first and sustain life as we know it. We must live together with plants, in balance and harmony. Many creatures in nature sustain life through essential kinds of symbiosis, and we are no different. Caring for our environment is not only a great responsibility, but a necessity. Your plants are a daily reminder that we must take care at every scale.
3
MAKE FRIENDS WITH PLANTS
Horticultural activity inspires social connections between people. Learning from each other and sharing results is key. Not only can plants connect us with other people, but we can also connect with plants, too. Plants are friends, too. They have their own sense, but also rely on us to take care of them. As you get to know your plants you will discover each has its own personality. Living together with your plants, you will notice that it cultivates an increased compassion, empathy, and a greater respect for life.
4
PLANTS BY DESIGN
The natural world gives us bountiful inspiration. The forms and systems of nature provide primary examples of effective and sustainable design through circular systems. From earth care, to people care, to fair share, the practice of permaculture was developed with these systems and philosophies in mind. Real sustainable plant practices require us to produce no waste and utilize on-site, local resources. Collect rainwater, grow your own food, compost your food scraps, harness and reuse all of your natural and local resources before going out and buying something new.

PASSION FOR PLANTS IS A RIPLE EFFECT
Caring for plants leads to mindfulness, compassion and care. Understanding that nothing exists in isolation, our actions have consequences. One small action taken today can lead to a series of events that produce a better world for everyone. We must take care for all living things, learn from them and share our knowledge with others. Your passion is contagious. Your care for plants will inspire.
