The design-focused research initiatives by the House of Plants utilize an abundance of plant life to provide a surprise where you might not expect it. We hope that by placing this kind of installation into an unexpected place, it will make people stop, be in the moment, and reflect on their relationships to plants and their surrounding environment.

Our pop-up spaces provide a closeness to plants that support a greater presence of nature in everyday life. By providing information, and encouraging people to take care of plants, the ripple effect of this compassion will expand to all aspects of life. Taking and growing one of our seedlings or a packet of seeds, means taking part in the vision of the House of Plants.

Our research has been focused on climate, urban greenspaces, permaculture, biophilic design, environmental psychology, and the physical and mental health benefits that plant life can provide us in our living spaces.

Plants are green…

Greenwashing and a general lack of information makes it difficult to know where our house plants are grown before they come into our lives. Our research shows that 50% of the plants in Norway are grown right here. The other half are imported mostly from other European countries.  We discovered that while some of the most popular house plants originate from very far away, the seeds are now spread around the globe and can be propagated almost anywhere. In fact, importing some plants may be less harmful to the environment than heating a greenhouse needed to grow them locally. Regardless of where they come from, many house plants can offset their own carbon footprint and then some.

Plants bring people together…

There is no doubt that growing your own house plants, herbs and vegetables comes with a greater sense of joy and pride. By starting from just a seed it will bring you greater appreciation and care for all living things. You can share this compassion with the people around you. Gardening is not only therapeutic but can be a joyous convivial activity with friends and family.

Plants help give back…

There are many health benefits that living with plants can provide us. We all know that plants covert CO2 to Oxygen, giving us clean and healthy air to breathe. Studies show that they help us heal faster and create a more relaxing and stress-free environment. Surrounding ourselves with plants and taking care of them can foster a sharper metal focus and even improve our sleep quality. The power of plants goes beyond this to feelings that we can’t quite explain ourselves…. But you know it when you feel it!
